Initial rumors pointed to Apple’s largest iPhone 14 being called iPhone 14 Max, instead of iPhone 14 Plus.
Apparently, this belief was not unfounded, since Apple’s website seems to be full of references to the name that never was.
The name can easily be seen on the Apple support page called “Identify iPhone model”. Just look for the iPhone 14 Plus image on the page and when you try to save it locally to your device, you will see the name “iphone-14-max”.

If you use developer mode in Safari to browse the code of Apple’s web pages, more references appear throughout the site.
This suggests that Apple intended to call it the iPhone 14 Max at some point. What we will never know is what led Apple to change “Max” to “Plus”.
