If you’ve been following us for a while, then you probably already know that in addition to keeping you informed, we’re always trying to add more knowledge to your everyday life, with tips and tutorials so you can get the most out of your devices and apps.

Today, continuing this routine, we present another tip; this time for iPhone and iPad users! Learn how to rename your photos on Apple portable devices below!

How to Rename Your Photos and Videos on iPhone and iPad

For those who have used an Apple device with a camera for a long time, it’s nothing new: iOS and iPadOS have their own naming pattern for photo and video files generated by the devices themselves. Usually following the “IMG_000” model – where 000 represents an increasing numerical sequence.

Although this standard serves very well for the vast majority of purposes, sometimes it may be necessary to rename the photos and videos generated by the camera; fitting the file into some prerequisite or simply renaming a photo of a document for better understanding.

In these situations, many people end up transferring the images to the computer to perform the operation. But this is not necessary! You can rename these photos and videos from your iPhone and iPad using the Files app.

Check out the step by step below.

  • With your device in hand, open the “Photos” and find the photo or video you would like to rename;
  • Now, tap on the share button located at the bottom of the screen and select the option “Save to Files”;
  • On the new screen, choose a folder where you want to save the photo or video and tap “To save”;
    • Tip: for a single video or photo file, you can add the file to “Files” with the desired name. To do this, simply enter the file name at the bottom of the screen and tap “Save”.

  • Return to the system home screen and open the app “Files”;
    • If you can’t find the app easily, swipe down from the home screen to perform a search.
  • Now, in the tab “To explore”, access the folder where you saved the chosen photo or video;
  • Once the file is found, tap and hold on it until the options menu opens. Tap “rename”.
  • Enter a new name for the photo or video and tap “Concluded”.
    • It is not necessary to add the file extension to the name. It will keep the original extension.

You’ve learned how to rename photos and videos on your iPhone and iPad! Now, just send the file by message or email – or even save it back in Photos – and it will keep the name given by you.

In addition to being able to use Files, you can also perform the same procedure using a cloud service such as Google Drive or Dropbox. So you still don’t need to go to a computer to give the new names. However, doing everything as we demonstrated above proved to be more comfortable.
