The iPhone 14 will bring two long-awaited improvements to the front camera

iPhones have been using the same 12MP f/2.2 front-facing camera since the iPhone 11, but it looks like the iPhone 14 could bring improved selfie-taking capabilities.

According to the analyst Ming Chi Kuo the next generation of iPhone is going to receive two key upgrades to the front-facing camera: a larger lens aperture and the addition of autofocus.

Kuu says that the camera aperture will go from f/2.2 to f/1.9which will increase the amount of light that can reach the sensor and reduce the depth of field (the background will look more out of focus).

On the other hand, the iPhone camera will have autofocus, improving the quality of selfies and video calls.

It’s somewhat surprising that Apple doesn’t offer autofocus on its front-facing cameras on the iPhone, as it’s a feature many phone manufacturers build in.

In favor of Apple, it is true that the front cameras are usually always placed at the same distance from the face, so being able to vary the focus is not so necessary. However, if the aperture is increased, the depth of field (the range of focus distance) is reduced, so getting the focus right becomes important.
