Although details are scant at this time, american blog have independently confirmed that Apple is holding Mac-related press releases this week. This has also been corroborated by other sources on Twitter, including Ian Zelbo:

Various sources have received information that the presentations will take place on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, with an embargo for the invited press scheduled for the Monday January 23. This pattern makes sense and is in line with what Apple usually does: an announcement on Tuesday, submissions and distribution of units for review on Wednesday and Thursday, and embargo of releases until next Monday.

It is important to treat all of this information with skepticism for now. Apple’s marketing plans can change suddenly and can always be reduced or adjusted at the last moment. The embargo dates, in particular, can also change due to a number of different factors.

When Apple holds press releases, it can be for any number of reasons, from software updates to hardware releases and more. People say that this week’s presentations are related to updates for Mac, but at the moment no further details are known. This data suggests that if there is an embargo for a product that is on the market, it is likely to be a hardware revision embargo.

Apple has been planning to release new versions of the MacBook Pro for several months now, but has been faced with several delays and issues in getting it done.

New updates to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro will focus on performance improvements, with updates to the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. The M2 chip was first announced in June of last year and is currently available in the 13-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and the latest MacBook Air.

In fact, we have already seen several times the rumors of updates for the MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch, and even GeekBench test results. These results gave us our first look at the performance of the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. The new Macs also appeared in the Steam database last month.

Considering that the new updates to the MacBook Pro will be focused on processing improvements, it makes sense that they could be announced via a Press release. These updates have been expected for several months, and Apple may now have Stock to release instead of waiting for an event in March.
