Only the iPhone 14 Pro models are said to get the latest A16 chip. But it is said that the basic model will not simply remain with the chip of the previous year.
The base models of the iPhone 14 may not just get last year’s A15 chip after all. A Wall Street Journal report now talks about an improved version. So far, the rumor mill has been relatively unanimous that only the Pro models will get the new A16 and that the basic models will have a chip from the previous year, namely the A15 from the iPhone 13, installed for the first time.
However, the author of the Wall Street Journal article does not reveal exactly what this “enhanced version” of the A15 is and what the statement is based on. Smaller adjustments are conceivable, as Apple has already done in the past with the iPad variants of the A chips – such as the A12, which has been expanded as the A12X and A12Z for devices.
Chip recycling with a new number?
On the other hand, Apple doesn’t shy away from naming new model generations without significantly changing the chips. The current S7 chip in the Apple Watch corresponds to last year’s model, the S6. And even with the expected S8, according to rumors, the differences should not be too big.
A different name and minor improvements to the A15 could definitely counteract the impression that the basic models are far behind the Pro models with the iPhone 14. According to previous rumours, Apple is clearly opening up the gap between the price ranges with the iPhone 14. Only the Pro models should receive significant changes in the display, the appearance of the front or the camera chip.
