It sometimes happens that you create an account on a new application freshly downloaded on your smartphone. However, it is not always so easy to delete it afterwards, either because no option is offered to erase your data, or simply because you forgot to do so. Fortunately, Google has decided to take the subject head on.

Applications available on the Play Store will now have to have a ” easily accessible option » to delete your account, both in the app itself and on the web. In a blog post, Google explains that this change aims to give users “ more clarity and control over their in-app data “.

Google wants to help you delete your accounts

Thanks to the new account deletion policy for Android apps, apps that create an account must also offer an easy way to delete the account. The move follows that of Apple, which implemented a similar policy on June 30, 2022 for App Store apps.

Additionally, the policy also requires developers to delete user data from their servers upon account deletion. If a developer needs to retain user data for specific reasons, they should specify this in the app.

As is often the case, this policy comes into effect in stages. Creators have until December 7 to answer questions about data deletion in their app’s security form. The changes will appear in the Play Store in early 2024, then developers can request an extension until May 31 of the same year.

This change is part of a larger plan by Google to make life easier for Android smartphone users. Recently, the company has, for example, greatly facilitated the daily life of owners of several Android devices, by allowing applications to be downloaded on several smartphones at the same time.
