Google introduced this Wednesday (10) the Pixel Fold, its first foldable cell phone. After countless leaks and rumors, the device finally had its details confirmed during the 2023 I / O event, including its high-performance hardware and other features that seek to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4.

The Pixel Fold sports a high-strength hinge that allows it to “open and close” its flexible screen more securely. The cell phone has a design that refers to the look of the Pixel 7 Pro, so there is a triple set of cameras and sides with a metallic finish. Check out:

Its internal screen measures 7.6 inches and has OLED technology., in addition to Full HD+ resolution (2,208 x 1,840 pixels) distributed in a 6:5 aspect ratio and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The display is capable of peak brightness of 1,400 nits and contrast of 1,000,000:1.

When closing the cell phone, there is an external screen of 5.8 inches with OLED technology, Full HD+ resolution (2,092 x 1,080 pixels) and 120 Hz refresh rate. This panel is protected with Gorilla Glass Victus, a technology that promises more resistance against glass damage.

The phone’s hinge is designed by Google itself. There is a dual shaft aluminum alloy fabrication that promises safer friction. According to the company, this is the “strongest hinge on a foldable phone”.

One of the biggest highlights of the first folding cell phone from big tech is its advanced set of cameras that promise to maintain the brand’s good reputation in photography. At the rear, there is a main lens with a 48 MP sensor, a wide-angle lens with a 10.8 MP sensor and a 10.8 MP sensor telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom.

The front camera present on the edge of the internal screen has a resolution of 8 MP, while the sensor used on the external screen has 9.5 MP. With its unique shape, the foldable is capable of offering different image capture modes taking advantage of its secondary screen.

The foldable is powered by Google Tensor G2a custom platform powered by a CPU with dual 2.85GHz Cortex-X1 cores, dual 2.35GHz Cortex-A78 cores, and quad 1.8GHz Cortex-A55 cores, plus a Mali-G710 GPU MP07 and 2nd Gen Edge TPU to optimize AI-based tasks.

To ensure good multitasking performance, the Pixel Fold will work with 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, in addition to options with 256 GB and 512 GB of internal storage. The hardware is powered by a 4,821mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging. The handset will come out of the box running Android 13.

New multitasking features

Pixel Fold enables a variety of new features unique to foldable phones. As an example, users will have access to exclusive features to make video calls on Google Meet, allowing them to quickly switch between screens when using the cell phone folded at an angle close to 90º — a configuration called “Table Mode”.

It will also be possible to use this mode to watch videos on YouTube: the upper half of the screen will play the video and, with an upcoming update of the application, it will be possible to control playback through buttons placed in the lower half.

Like other folding cell phones with a horizontal format, the Pixel Fold will have split-screen usage modes to optimize multitasking workflows, enabling fast file transfers and other functions. The Taskbar is also available so that users can quickly switch between applications. Check out:

Google claims that even more news will come soon to its new products in the Pixel line. With the launch of Android 14, scheduled for mid-August 2023, the brand’s new cell phones and tablets will complement the portfolio with different capabilities to facilitate the daily lives of users.
