“Like before, only better”? Gamescom 2022 could not always keep these high-spirited ambitions. The editors present highlights and disappointments.
On Saturday and Sunday, visitors are still pouring into the exhibition halls in Cologne, but for the editors of voonze online Gamescom 2022 will soon be over: the business area, where most of the meetings with developers and publishers take place, closes on Friday evening.
Admittedly, these dates haven’t always been as exciting this year as they have been in the past. The list of cancellations is known to be long, including Sony, Nintendo and Activision. Microsoft also left its headliners at home: “Starfield” was not shown, and there were no new announcements. And in the end even Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck canceled at short notice.
Nevertheless, the editors of voonze online and c’t were able to watch or try out a lot – thanks to the absence of the big players, there was sometimes even time for smaller games that would otherwise have fallen behind. This year, in the absence of Sony and Nintendo, Plaion (that’s what Koch Media is now called) and the Tencent offshoot Level Infinite played big. There was no shortage of curiosities either: BMW surprised a Mini with a Pikachu design. The editors have compiled their personal highlights and disappointments of Gamescom 2022 in a photo series.
