Windows 7 stops receiving security updates, leaving it vulnerable to possible cyberattacks

Two years ago now, in 2020, Microsoft already confirmed that it was no longer offering patches intended for the final consumer and only the companies that continued to pay for technical support they have continued to receive them since then, a situation that is also ending now. These are the Professional, Enterprise and Professional editions for Embedded Systems.

As an emergency resource as soon as the loophole of Windows Embedded POSReady 7 remains, a version of Windows 7 specifically designed for retail outletswhich has support until October 2024, when it will be 15 years since the appearance of this version of the operating system.

In parallel, it has also been announced that Windows 8.1 will stop receiving updates, when it is 10 years since its appearance. For a year now, users of this version of the Microsoft operating system have been receiving notifications from the developer to update their computers to Windows 11.

According to Statcounter data, the three most installed versions worldwide of the Microsoft operating system are the following:

-Windows 7: 11%

-Windows 11: 17%

-Windows 10: 68%

Without new security updates from Microsoft, the software developers themselves will not offer updates for their programs that run on Windows 7 either, which can cause that cyber attackers redouble their efforts to exploit vulnerabilities on these computers. Since hardware requirements can be a barrier to upgrading computers that are already a few years old to the most recent version, Windows 11, it may be more advisable to move from Windows 7 to Windows 10, a version of the operating system that is not as demanding in this section and whose technical support will end in 2025.
