Apple is thinking of a future without “Hey” for the Siri voice assistant

Apple would be trying to simplify access to your voice assistant present on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, TV, Carplay and HomePod so you can activate it just saying the word “Siri” followed by the required command. Though delete the word “Hey” from Siri’s recognition and activation command it could apparently seem like just a small change, this step would instead require a considerable effort both in programming and training artificial intelligence.

The shorter acknowledgment phrase wouldn’t be the only change intended for Siri’s future. According to Mark Gurman, a journalist from BloombergApple would also be thinking of greater integration into third-party apps and services and some improvements to the ability to understand and process user requests.

Apple has been working on this evolutionary step of Siri for several months already to try to make it available to the public as early as next year or, at the latest, from 2024. The Cupertino company has already begun to carry out internal tests with the its employees and would have already collected a sufficient amount of data.

The transition from a double word to a single one would not only allow Apple to catch up with Amazon which has always used only the word Alexa to activate its voice assistant, but also to improve itself compared to Google which uses the word “Ok “and” Hey “before” Google “for his Assistant but which still allows you to make subsequent requests without having to repeat the activation word. A similar step to the one Apple is thinking about was also made by Microsoft in 2018.

The challenge for Apple, as mentioned, will certainly be very demanding as Siri will have to be able to understand the single activation word pronounced in multiple languages, accents and dialects. Obviously, a double activation word greatly decreases the possibility of error.

Despite the delay accumulated compared to other voice assistants, Alexa in the first place, Apple still focuses a lot on Siri, which last year celebrated the 10th anniversary since the launch of 2011, and has recently also made other small changes by adding a new voice recorded by a member of the LGBTQ + community and introducing a new activation sound.
