iPhone Keynote: What we’re not expecting today

At the “Far Out” event, Apple should present plenty of new products. But some devices still remain in the pipeline. An overview.

A lot of new devices are expected at today’s Apple keynote – the event called “Far Out”, which takes place in Cupertino from 7 p.m., is packed with topics. However, the event will certainly not present all the products that have been the subject of more or less intense rumors in recent months. It is generally expected that Apple will hold a second event in October. This is also a good idea because the iPhone keynote will take place very early this year, giving Apple enough time to prepare.

What we generally shouldn’t see today are two popular hardware categories. One is the tablets: Apple traditionally presents new iPads either in spring or in October. It also fits that iPadOS 16 will not be released at the same time as iOS this year, which Apple apparently wants to do in principle in the future. New Pro models with an M2 chip are expected as new iPads, as well as a new-look entry-level “iPad 10” with a USB port. An iPad mini 7 would also be an option, but little has been heard about it so far.

For the Mac, there are new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that could come with the M2 Pro and M2 Max – a year after their predecessors with the M1 Pro and M1 Max. So far, Apple has only used the M2 in the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. A Mac mini with M2 would also be an option if Apple didn’t discontinue the product line in favor of the Mac Studio. The latter still comes with an M1 chip (including the Ultra variant), but is too new to be overhauled in October. Furthermore, a Mac Pro with Apple Silicon is still pending, which Apple should actually bring this year to complete the ARM switch.

Also not to be expected today are Apple’s first steps into the field of mixed reality (MR), a combination of augmented and virtual reality technology (AR/VR) including a suitable headset. There have been rumors for years, the hardware is said to be almost ready and Apple recently registered suitable brands. However, the group will probably make such an announcement as a separate event in order to do justice to the importance – company boss Tim Cook sees MR as an important topic for the future.

Accordingly, we primarily expect three things from the “Far Out” event: new iPhones (a total of four variants of the 14 generation), three new Apple Watch models and new AirPods Pro (second generation). However, it is possible that Apple will pull more surprises out of the hat. The evening will be exciting. Mac & i accompanies him with a live ticker and subsequent analysis in the live stream.
