The smartwatch with sophisticated sports functions and extensive health tracking can definitely compete with the Apple Watch.
Sports and Navigation
Athletes can choose from over 100 sports. The Watch GT 3 Pro records specific metrics for many of them, such as backswing and upswing times in golf or depth history in freediving (Huawei does not officially support scuba diving). GPS and altimeter precisely logged the routes when running and hiking in practice.
To navigate, you can use the companion app Huawei Health to import routes from the iPhone or Komoot and transfer them to the smartwatch, which worked without any problems when trying it out. Routes already tracked with the watch can be exported in GPX, TCX and KML formats.
health sensors
The sensors record the sleep phases at night as well as heart rate, oxygen saturation and skin temperature throughout the day. At the time of going to press, Apple’s health app only knew the body temperature, as measured by clinical thermometers, and did not adopt the slightly lower skin temperature. The other data can be synchronized by the Huawei Health and Apple Health apps if desired.
Unfortunately, the announced ECG analysis with arteriosclerosis risk screening was not yet available at the time of going to press. Huawei is still waiting for the CE mark for medical devices for its ECG app, which should also run on iOS. Huawei is equipping the Watch GT 3 Pro with a special metal button for the ECG, making it the only Huawei watch with an ECG function for the time being.
An account with Huawei is required to set up the watch. Optionally, Huawei saves the fitness and health data via its own cloud on servers located within the European Union – which is certainly not unimportant for some German users of the Chinese service provider.
There is a button in the Huawei Health app to delete the data from the cloud while keeping it in the app and on the smartwatch.
The manufacturer states seven days for the model with a diameter of 43 mm and 14 days for the variant with a diameter of 46 mm. In practice, the smaller version ran for five days with heavy use and deactivated Always-on-Display (AoD).
Activating the always-on display shortened the runtime to two days in the test. Huawei does not achieve a significantly better runtime than Apple with the 43 mm watch.
