Galaxy S23, 200MP cam? Meanwhile, Samsung mocks the 48MP of the iPhone 14 Pro
New ‘unofficial’ details continue to emerge constantly on the next generation of top-of-the-range smartphones from Samsung, obviously we are talking about the Galaxy S23 and specifically the Ultra version. After having seen the probable dimensions of the various models, in addition to the comparison with the models of the S22 range, which they will replace, and having taken a first look at the camera group, we continue on this last point with a rumor from the reliable leaker Ice Universe.
Although it is an indiscretion, his post on Twitter does not leave room for many doubts, since the leaker is clearly certain of what has been stated. According to Ice Universe the next top-of-the-range Galaxy S23 Ultra will retain a similar size as far as the camera assembly is concerned, but will introduce a brand new 200MP sensor for the main unit. It will therefore have a size of 1 / 1.3 inches with pixels of 0.6μm and a larger aperture of f / 1.7, which will allow more light to be channeled. For reference, the S22 Ultra’s 108MP sensor is 1 / 1.33-inch with 0.8 µm pixels and an f / 1.8 aperture. The news had already emerged previously and the sensor that will be used could be the unpublished ISOCELL HP2.
The leaker finally adds that, despite the iPhone 14 Pro’s 48MP main camera being 1 / 1.3-inch itself, the Galaxy S23’s will be slightly larger. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is said to also retain the S22 Ultra’s 10MP telephoto lens with 10x and 3x optical zoom, while nothing is known about the ultrawide camera. The company is also expected to use software intelligence to help the S23 Ultra make significantly better images and videos, but there aren’t many details on that obviously.
The number of megapixels of a camera is still today a parameter capable of convincing the (less technical) user to purchase a top-of-the-range smartphone and, as digital photography experts teach, the parameters that can make a difference in quality. there are many, primarily the size of the sensor.
But as those who have been following the challenge between Apple and Samsung for years well remember, often the clash is about the numbers and characteristics that ‘on paper’ make the most impression, and the recent media campaign of the Korean giant has developed in an ironic way. between tweets and videos that aim to convince buyers with ads that are sometimes very hilarious and full of quotes and references, such as the veiled ‘dark side’ of telephony.
Join the Flip Sidereads the promotional video, targeting the monotony of non-folding smartphones, iPhone in the first place.
Even the Samsung Mobile US division increases the dose by asking on Twitter when Apple will present its first folding, also inserting a timer in which it remembers that Samsung has embraced this market for over 2 years.
But if the above videos could become a double-edged sword capable of hitting even non-foldable Samsung devices, what about campaigns that target iPhone’s photographic capabilities?
Again, Samsung wants to remind us that the 48MP of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are outdated, and that they have been introducing the 108MP for over 2 years. It goes without saying that Samsung does not spare the details, such as the counter which also in this case has well exceeded 2 years ahead of its main competitor.
Samsung has behind it a rather rich history of derision towards Apple’s design choices, such as that of a few years ago and related to the removal of the headphone jack, only to make the same move a few months later. When it comes to folding devices, Samsung has an obvious advantage, since between the two it was the only company to market them. Even for cameras it was the first to raise the megapixel bar, however it will be interesting to see if there are features of iPhone 14 Pro that Samsung will eventually ‘adopt’ in the future.
