The Steam gaming platform will soon run on Tesla electric cars, Elon Musk promises on Twitter. A demo is possible as early as next month.
Steam is coming to the Tesla: CEO Elon Musk has announced the popular PC gaming platform for his electric cars. A Steam demo on Teslas is expected as early as next month, Musk wrote on Twitter.
Some video games can already be played on the infotainment system of the Tesla cars, but these are mostly casual games or mobile games. In current models, Tesla installs an RDNA 2 GPU from AMD, which takes over the graphics rendering. A Ryzen combination processor works alongside it. With a computing power of around 10 TFlops, current Teslas achieve the gaming power of the current consoles PS5 from Sony and Xbox Series X from Microsoft. The resolution of the infotainment displays in current models is only slightly above Full HD, so demanding games can also be displayed there with smooth frame rates.
Last year Tesla promised, among other things, that the blockbuster game “Cyberpunk 2077” could be played on the infotainment system in PS5 quality. The cyberpunk role-playing game is not yet available for the Tesla – this could change with a Steam integration.
Gamble while standing
As the largest PC gaming platform in the world, Steam integration in Tesla cars would give users instant access to thousands of video games. Because games on Steam are tied to the account, the titles would only have to be purchased once. So if you already play with Steam on your computer, you no longer need to buy any additional games to gamble in the Tesla.
However, you cannot play while driving: After criticism from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the e-car company has deactivated mobile gaming. So currently, Tesla infotainment system can only be used for gaming when the car is stationary. Previously, all you had to do was confirm that the player is not the driver. However, critics complained that the driver could also be distracted when the passenger is playing.
