DDR5 RAM: prices fall ahead of the arrival of AMD’s Ryzen 7000 and Intel’s Raptor Lake chips
Although still significantly higher than DDR4, next-gen DDR5 memory prices have come down dramatically over the past six months, good news ahead of the arrival of the next generations of processors from AMD and from Intel.
DDR5 memory modules arrived shortly after Intel’s Alder Lake-S platform late last year, but prices have so far been quite high. In effect, it took nearly 400 euros for a RAM kit consisting of two 16 GB bars a few months ago, when it is now possible to find around 175 euros.
Some entry-level kits are now available for less than €5/GB, whereas in January, these same kits cost more than €12/GB. At the end of last year, some scalpers were even reselling RAM sticks for more than 2000 euros on eBay. This is therefore excellent news before the arrival of chips under AMD’s Zen 4 architecture, but also of Intel’s Raptor Lake chips. We also know that the latter will benefit from a performance increase of 40%.
DDR5 prices drop significantly before the arrival of Zen 4 chips
The price of DDR5 memory will be crucial to the success of AMD’s upcoming AM5 platform, as the chipmaker has confirmed that it will not support DDR4. If the prices for the new generation of RAM are too high, consumers could more easily opt for Intel’s Raptor Lake chips which are still compatible with DDR4 RAM.
DDR4 modules should therefore not disappear from the market for a few more years, as long as 600 series motherboards are still available. For the moment, it is not known if the prices of DDR5 kits will continue to see their prices drop, but it is expected that some retailers will quickly offer packs including a new generation processor, a motherboard as well as DDR5 modules at fairly competitive prices. For their part, graphics cards have also seen their prices drop in recent months to reach reasonable prices.
