Can I take the router on vacation to have Internet?
Now that we are in July, it is the time chosen by many to go away from home for a few days of vacation. These days are for disconnecting and having a good time with both friends and family, but that does not mean that we have to be disconnected from the Internet. If you want to have Internet in your second residence or in a rental house, is there any point in taking the home router in your suitcase? In this article we answer this question and we give you some alternatives for it.
One might think that taking the router away is synonymous with also taking your Internet connection on the road, Nothing could be further from the truth. As we will see just below, the router is the device that allows us to connect to the Internet, but it is not the source of it.
Taking the router with you, a mistake
We start with the most basic: what is a router? If we stick to the definition given by the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy, a router is a device that distributes the flow of information packets between networks in the most efficient way. Said in a much simpler way, routers are tools that allow us to receive information from the Internet on our devices, and they are responsible for us being able to browse and download what we want.
These devices are, as we have said several times, the axis of many houses or offices, since they are usually located in the center so that the WiFi coverage they provide reaches as many rooms as possible. Obviously, these devices also allow us to connect to them via cable, something that will make the connection much more stable, with less delay and in fact it will be the only way for us to take advantage of 100% of the speed offered by the net.
So, can I take the router on vacation to have Internet? The answer could not be clearer: No, You can not. This router, as we have said, is responsible for sending information from the Internet to our devices, but for this you need to be connected to the internet. If we take the router in our suitcase and simply plug it in wherever we go, we will find that we have a “useless” device.
Alternatives to have Internet on vacation
If what you want is to have an Internet connection wherever you go, you have some very interesting alternatives that will serve you without problems. Several operators in our country offer Internet for second homes at very attractive prices. These allow us to have quite powerful connections without limits to enjoy in second homes, something ideal for those people who have planned be on vacation for several weeks. You also have the possibility to hire a normal fiber rate without permanence if you plan to spend even more time on vacation in a second residence.
In the event that you are going to stay for fewer days or have chosen a vacation rental destination, there are other options to consider. The first and easiest is use so-called tethering, which is basically sharing the data of our mobile rate with other devices so that they have Internet. We can also get hold of a 4G router and use data rates so we don’t have to spend our rate if we don’t have too many or simply want to keep them.
