Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 official: slimmer and with Leica cameras | Prices

In the end, it really happened: today Xiaomi unexpectedly presented (or at least with very little notice) its second generation folding, the MIX Fold 2. It arrives just a day away from Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 4 and Galaxy Flip 4, and just a handful of hours away from Motorola’s new RAZR. In short, this is turning out to be the week of leaflets.

If the RAZR is philosophically more similar to the Flip, MIX Fold 2 is instead a direct competitor of the Fold. The display folds like a book and is about the size of a small tablet when opened. As already anticipated in recent days, the Fold 2 is surprisingly thin: just 5.4mm when open, which translates into 11.2mm thick when closed. Sure, that’s still a lot when compared to a normal smartphone, but they are well over 4mm shorter than Samsung’s device. These values are comparable to those of Huawei’s latest Mate Xs, whose display however folds outwards and has a very thick column dedicated to cameras.

SLIMMING CARE

Xiaomi said he had worked a lot on the hinge, which has been called “Micro Water Drop”: its structure occupies only 8.8 mm. The name is not accidental: in its latest Mate Xs, Huawei has introduced a “Water Drop” hinge (note the absence of “Micro”) whose thickness amounts to 11.25 mm. The narrower hinge, in combination with the new generation flexible display, ensures a reduction in the visibility of the crease; not only is it narrower, but the depression averages 0.15 mm.

In order to reduce the thickness, Xiaomi has decided to make some sacrifices on the battery side: from the 5,000 mAh of the previous generation it has gone to 4,500. We now know that thanks to the significantly higher efficiency of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 produced by TSMC it is potentially more than enough to guarantee excellent autonomy: as we have seen in our review, ASUS ZenFone 9 makes sparks with only 4,300 mAh, even if it is it should be noted that it is much more compact. In short, a bold choice but it seems more than justified. Overall, thanks to these measures, the smartphone has also become much lighter: from 317 grams of the previous model we have dropped to “only” 262.

LEICA CAMERA AND SAMSUNG DISPLAY

The rear camera protrudes slightly, and is set into a rather large but overall elegant island. The main unit has a 50 MP sensor and optical stabilization, then there is an ultra-wide angle of 13 and a 2X telephoto of 8. At the front we have instead a 20 MP; of course, alternatively it is possible to open the smartphone and use the main module as a selfie camera, using the external display as a viewfinder.

What is interesting is to observe the arrival of the Leica certification, for the second time on a Xiaomi smartphone (the first was the 12S Ultra). As expected, the exclusive Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant shooting modes will also arrive, in addition to the shutter sound typical of the brand’s cameras. Note also the use of Samsung panels for both displays: Xiaomi has worked to ensure continuity and homogeneity of image and technical characteristics, from brightness to the refresh rate.

We therefore summarize schematically the data sheet:
