These big bee signs on Dublin main roads have a very simple meaning
Anyone driving on the N11 towards Dublin might be left questioning the meaning behind these random bee illustrations on the road – but there is a very simple explanation for them.
A few years ago, it was announced that as part of the All Ireland Pollinator Plan, a number of the country’s transport corridors are managed in a pollinator-friendly way. But while the explanation is rather straight forward, with the signs simply signifying that the area is being kept in a bee-friendly way to help revitalize the country’s bee population, some replies on Reddit were rather hilarious.

One user claimed: “Directions for bees”, while another said: “Bee movie screening up ahead.”
Another user said that the sign means that there are big bees waiting for you in the ditch. One person joked: “Must be an election going on for the bees.”
As well as motorways and main roads, other areas in Ireland that are now dedicated bee corridors are along railways and tramlines.
Dr Una Fitzpatrick from the National Biodiversity Data Centre in Waterford IT said of the rescue plan back in 2015: “We spent 40 years creating the problem so we are not going to solve it overnight”.
According to the All Ireland Pollinator Plan, one third of Ireland’s 90+ bee species have been under threat. One of the actions being taken under the plan is the reduction in the frequency of mowing along transport corridors such as roads.
