Samsung launches UFS 4.0 to explode transfer speeds on smartphones
On Twitter, Samsung has just announced the end of the development of the new UFS 4.0 standard. Thanks to this protocol, Samsung promises transfer speeds almost doubled, compared to those offered by UFS 3.1. The manufacturer mentions maximum speeds of 4200 MB/s.
With UFS 3.1 flash memory chips, Samsung was already delivering particularly fast read and write speeds in high-end smartphones like the Galaxy Note 20, with speeds of 2100MB/s reading and 1200MB/s downloading. writing. Two years after the launch of this standard, the Seoul firm is moving up a gear.
Indeed, the semiconductor division of the South Korean giant has just announced on Twitter the end of the development of the new UFS 4.0 standard. The protocol has been dubbed by the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) and it promises speeds of 23.2 Gbps per lane, which is twice what UFS 3.1 can offer (with 11.6 Gb/s). As Samsung points out, this amount of bandwidth is perfect for “5G smartphones requiring huge amounts of data processing, and should also be adopted in future automotive applications,” but also in augmented and virtual reality.
Samsung blasts transfer speeds with UFS 4.0
Using Samsung’s advanced 7th generation V-NAND technology, UFS 4.0 will deliver sequential read speed up to 4200MB/s and a sequential write speed of up to 2800 MB/s. As the manufacturer explains, this explosion of performance is also accompanied by a non-negligible gain in energy efficiency. For good reason, UFS 4.0 will offer a sequential read speed of 6.0 MB/s per mA, or a 46% improvement over the previous generation. Enough to allow end users to make the most of their smartphone’s battery life.
But that’s not all. To this must be added considerable progress in the miniaturization of these UFS 4.0 chips. Indeed, they will be in the form of a compact box with a maximum dimension of 11 mm x 13 mm x 1 mm. They will be available in several capacities, up to a maximum of 1 TB.
But then, when will we be able to take advantage of these UFS 4.0 chips in our smartphones? Good news here again, since Samsung says mass production should start in Q3 2022, if everything goes well. In other words, we should see the first devices and smartphones equipped with UFS 4.0 chips by the end of the year or the beginning of 2023 at the latest. As a reminder, Samsung plans to soon launch the manufacture of its first processors engraved in 3nm. Here again, the start of production is estimated for the second half of 2022.
