When Google announced the closure of Google News in 2014, some of us believed that it was a bluff and some of the parties would end up giving in. It was not so. Almost eight years have passed since then in which Google has been patiently waiting for the legislation to change. It changed, Google announced that its news service would be back in Spain and now Google News Spain is already operational.
The Spanish edition of Google News is now available through the Google News website and your mobile app, although it still appears as not available in our country on Google Play. However, if you have the app installed, you can now change the edition to Spanish from Spain.
Google News returns to Spain
The Spanish edition of Google News she had been missing since 2014, at which point Google decided to shut down the service after the government approved the Canon AEDE. Since then, the app cannot be downloaded from Google Play and even if you install the app, there was no option to choose the Spain Spanish edition.
At the end of last year, Google announced its intention to reopen Google News Spain, in a process that has now been completed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Google News. The Spanish edition of Google News can now be used on the official website as well as in the application, if you already have it installed. The app comes pre-installed -sometimes hidden- on some mobiles.
If you don’t have the app, you’ll have to wait for the “next few days”, as the app keeps showing a “This item is not available in your country” message if you try to install it from Google Play. What you can do is install the application from its APK from sites like APKMirror, while you wait for the door to open on Google Play.
If you already used the application, it is most likely that you have it configured for another region. In such a case, you can go to the application settings and in Languages and regions that interest you. Press Add a region and language and in the list it will appear, now yes, Spanish – Spain).
It has rained a lot since Google News left Spain. In fact, back in 2014 the app was called Noticias y Tiempo. Later, the old Google Play Newsstand app became the new Google News app. Already blocked and forgotten in Spain, Google News received a major redesign in 2017 and a more recent one with Material You, which is still pending to reach users.
