The experience that Google Maps offers to cyclists is increasingly complete. We recently discussed how it was refining bike routes, and now they’re updating their bike navigation feature to provide more information on the way forward, all with the goal of avoiding congested routes and steep inclines.

With Google Maps we can now have a preview of the possible routes so that it is possible to make a better decision with all the data in hand.

The best route, according to Google Maps, will be the one with the least traffic, the best type of road (with more bike paths), and the fewest number of turns.

Avoiding traffic jams will be one of the priorities, but it will not be the only one, since now it will be able to predict the elevation of the existing options and select the flattest or most mountainous path, depending on the cyclist’s preferences.
According to Google’s note, it will highlight steps, stairs and steep hills, just like specialized apps like Komoot do.

Also, like Komoot, it will break down by type of road with the proportion of cycle lanes, secondary and main roads.

Finally, cyclists will be able to benefit from the new Google Maps location sharing notification, so that friends or family can be notified when they arrive at a specific place.

Great news for those who always go with their mobile attached to the bicycle.
