Gboard, the Google keyboard becomes more comfortable on folding with the latest news

The first clues had emerged in March, and at the end of May we had already glimpsed it, even if it was not yet activated: but now, with the latest version of the beta from Gboard (precisely v11.9.05.452014594), the “split layout” becomes reality. But what is it about?

Simple: of one split keyboard configuration designed to make typing on large screens easier and above all that extend a lot also horizontally, such as those of the folding and tablets (on the latter it will be implemented later, while for now it is only available on smartphones).

As can be seen from the screenshot above, by selecting the “split layout” the Google keyboard leaves the central area clear, being the most difficult to reach by typing with two hands on a large display, and instead concentrates the keys on the sides screen.

It must be said that at present, however, it is not obvious to be able to activate this new option: some users succeed, but for others it is still impossible a sign that we are only at the beginning of an implementation that Mountain View is gradually managing and of which we ignore the exact timing: usually, however, in the space of a few weeks the roll out significantly widens.

To try to see if on your smartphone it is already possible to use the “split layout” on Gboard you first need to sign up for the beta program and then download the latest version of the app. Once this requirement is satisfied, just select the button dedicated to changing the layout on the toolbar after bringing the keyboard to the screen: the new option should appear in the list of the various selectable possibilities – but, as mentioned, it may not even be there.
