Facebook gives uploaders a share of advertising revenue from videos with music
20 percent of the advertising revenue beckons users who upload their own videos with Facebook-licensed background music. Here’s how Meta fights TikTok.
TikTok takes valuable market share from Facebook. Facebook owner Meta Platforms is reacting to this with a new bonus: Users who upload their own videos, which are accompanied by music, get a fifth of the advertising revenue generated by the videos. However, several conditions apply.
Videos must be at least 60 seconds long and background music must be from the music catalog already licensed by Facebook. backgroundmusic is important – the music must not be the primary purpose of the video, the company emphasizes. The offer is only valid in those countries for which Facebook has licensed music at all. In addition, the video must comply with both Facebook’s Community Guidelines and Music Video Regulations.
Let’s start with US advertising
Initially, only videos that serve US users with ads embedded in the video stream will be included in the payout. In the next few months, all countries with Facebook-licensed music will gradually be added. At the same time, the uploader must reside in a country where Facebook processes payouts.

The company promises to successively expand the catalog of licensed music.
Videos are increasingly important to Facebook. On the one hand, Facebook users spend an average of half their Facebook usage time playing videos. On the other hand, the Chinese app TikTok is successful in this area. According to its own statements, it has more than a billion monthly active users, and the trend is rising. Only Facebook, YouTube and Instagram have more in this industry. Like Facebook, Instagram is owned by Meta Platforms, and YouTube is owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet. For younger people, TikTok is even a kind of search engine, and TikTok is also gaining in importance as a news source.
