Dublin man cycling 3,000km of Ireland’s coastline will need to consume 8,000 calories a day

Meet the man who will be cycling nearly 3,000km of Ireland’s coastline to raise money for a good cause.

Dubliner Alan Henry will make the whopping 17-day long journey alone on his bike to fundraise for climate change awareness from June 3 to June 19.

Alan told Dublin Live: “I’ve been cycling for 15 years at this stage.

“The cyclist in me was very interested in this but it’s the environmental side that’s really pushed me to promote the event and raise awareness about climate change within Ireland.”

When asked how he was preparing for the trip, Alan said from a physical perspective it wasn’t possible to fully prepare for a trip like this.

The Dun Laoghaire man added: “I’m doing my best on the bike. I get out on the bike once or twice a week in preparation for this.

“But there’s going to be a huge amount of mental challenge in this as well as physical. Getting back on the bike day after day is something that will be a big challenge.”

The 39-year-old who works in finance will also be following a plant-based diet with minimal single-use plastic waste and no new non-essential cycle equipment for the trek.

He said: “I’m plant-based myself for the last three years so it is something that I’m familiar with. In terms of the calories, it’s certainly going to be a challenge.

“I’ll need to consume closer to 8,000 calories on average a day. There will be double breakfasts, lunches, and dinners all along the way.”

Alan was blown away by the support and generosity of his friends and family who will be opening their homes to him.

He said: “I have to say how good my family, friends, and colleagues have been in terms of the accommodation or even just logistical things like food and washing machines.

“I’m trying not to use any new cycle equipment as part of it. People have lent me bike computers and various different things that will help me along the way.

“So this general support is fantastic. What I learnt is that people are really keen to help. They’re very interested in the cause.

“There are going to be very long days on the bike so arriving somewhere and seeing a friendly face will be a huge thing. I also looking forward to meeting people as well.

“Even if it’s in B&Bs or going out to get food, I’m really excited to meet people around the country.”

Alan is partnering up with ECO-UNESCO to raise money for climate change awareness in Ireland. You can donate here to support his cause.
