The Call of Duty franchise is considered one of the most important in the history of video games, so much so that in fact Sony recently highlighted that it is “essential” and “essential” to sell its video game consoles. It is impossible to deny that this series of war action games have a lot of pull, and this has allowed Activision to launch a new delivery every year without producing a certain feeling of “fed up” on the part of the players.
That has been the trend that the franchise has followed, but Activision Blizzard has confirmed that it plans to break it in 2023, and that is that in that year we will not see the launch of a new Call of Duty. To make up for it, the company will release new “premium” content which will be available for delivery this year, at least in theory. For fans of the franchise this means that we won’t see a new Call of Duty Black Ops until 2024.
To put some context to this information, it is important to remember that this will be the first time since 2004 that an entire year will pass without a new Call of Duty arriving. Activision Blizzard has not given reasons, that is, it has not explained why it is not going to launch a new installment of the franchise in 2023, but I think that may be motivated by the intergenerational transition stage in which we find ourselves.
Launching a new Call of Duty in 2023 would mean maintaining the technical base of the previous generation consoles, with all the limitations that this entails and the problems that it could give at a technical level in order to optimize for the new generation. With this in mind, I think This year’s Call of Duty will be the last to come to Xbox One and PS4, and that the 2024 installment will be the first developed exclusively for the new generation, and obviously also for PC.
And speaking of this year’s installment, we all know it will be Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, and that will have a setting focused on the current era. Barring disaster, it is most likely that this new installment will be a success and that it will improve the figures obtained by Call of Duty Vanguard, an installment that did not have the expected success. I remind you, before finishing, that Activision is also working on Call of Duty Warzone 2a new installment of its well-known Battle Royale that could bring important improvements at a technical level.
