How young people can learn about technology and open source
During the period of confinement during the Covid-19 pandemic, governments, companies and individuals invested time and strengthened their digital skillswhich generated a transformation in the way work is done and the workload is managed.
That is why the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC) indicated that it is necessary to include policies that help workers face the technological leap that virtuality represents.
In July of this year, Mario Cimoli, Interim Executive Secretary of the Commission, indicated that “science, technology and innovation are essential for the recovery and development of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean”.
STEM professionals
At least in Colombia, 34% of higher education graduates are dedicated to this type of career; while the figures for Chile (45%), Mexico (42%) and Argentina (41%) reflect the leadership of these countries in terms of STEM areas (science, technology, engineering and mathematics for its acronym in English), according to a study by ManPowerGroup, an expert firm in human talent.
Jaime Bejarano, general manager of Red Hat Colombia, a company dedicated to offering solutions for Open Source to other organizations, affirms that “it is necessary to increase the number of graduates in STEM areas”.
In addition, he maintains that “the demand for developerscloud and security architecture designers, Artificial Intelligence experts and machine learningalready exceeds the availability of professionals in these areas”.
The need to learn with Open Source
In this context of searching for new skills related to technology and its application at work, strengthening these areas is a responsibility to avoid a possible crisis of professionals in the organizations that need them.
For this reason, the training of trained personnel should begin in educational institutions with the possibility of giving their students the necessary conditions for their development. “In order to guarantee access to all interested students, Red Hat training courses and certification exams are free,” Bejarano said.
One of the benefits of learning in trainings in Open Source or Open Sourceis that they are accessible from home, so it is not a problem to develop this type of knowledge.
How to learn with Open Source
Students have to be prepared for the jobs of the future that will require a higher knowledge of technology on their part, such as in related sectors such as robotics or even computer science. metaversenow under development.
That is why the Platzi educational platform will allow users to access, free of charge, more than a thousand courses, among which there are some related to open source, from August 19 to August 21. In case you are not sure what you want to learn, a test will also be available to help you make the decision.
This initiative, called Platzi Day, will give students the opportunity to explore some of their disciplines of interest and approach the technology through different approaches such as marketing, creative thinking, data analysis and logical thinking.
Once this period is over, they will be able to choose if they wish to deepen their knowledge in Open Source and, in this way, innovate in their professions.
