Late last year, the second-generation Nest Hub received improvements that allowed users to get a better view of their quality of sleep.
One of these features is the ability to detect snoring and cough while sleeping.
Now it looks like Google could bring these capabilities to your Android phone.
9to5Google has discovered the new sleep detection feature in a line of code in the latest version of the Google Health Studies app.
The function will use the microphone of your phone to listen for possible sleep disturbances, like snoring and coughing. To protect your privacy, this processing will take place on your phone.
The goal of the Google study is “bringing an advanced set of detection capabilities and algorithms to Android devices with the goal of providing users with meaningful insight into their sleep.”
For now, the experimental feature is limited to full-time Google employees.
It’s unclear when Google will release this new sleep monitoring feature to the public. That said, Pixel owners may have access to it before it’s generally available.
