Scorsese and DiCaprio: Next Movie for Apple TV+

The major director and the “Titanic” star had just completed a production for the streaming service – now the next one has already been announced.

Apple’s TV+ streaming service has secured another production from a famous Hollywood couple. After “Gangs of New York”, “Aviator”, “Departed – Unter Enemies”, “Shutter Island” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” director Martin Scorsese (79) and Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio (47) are planning another one Cooperation – again financed by the iPhone group.

Together, Scorsese and DiCaprio want to film the story of a historical survival drama off the coast of South America, as reported by the US industry journals “Hollywood Reporter” and “Variety”. Apple has secured the film rights for the production, which currently has no official name. The template is the non-fiction book “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder” by US author David Grann.

The story revolves around a British warship that is stranded on a deserted island off Chile in 1741 after being pursued by the Spanish navy. In a brutal struggle for survival, the crew experiences starvation, murder and mutiny. The British Admiralty hold a trial to find out what happened on the island. Which parts of the film take place on the island and which take place in the courtroom has not yet been revealed.

Interestingly, Grann (55) had just previously provided another template for a Scorsese DiCaprio film that will run on Apple TV+. Grann is also the author of the non-fiction book Killers of the Flower Moon, which was recently adapted into a film by Scorsese and will be coming to the service in the coming months – currently in post-production. It follows the murders of members of the Osage Indian tribe in Oklahoma in the 1920s after large oil deposits were discovered on their land.

Apple is spending more and more money on its TV+ productions – the service’s initial offer alone, which relies almost entirely on in-house productions or exclusive purchases, is said to have been over one billion US dollars. In the meantime, this has been a success in terms of content: Apple was able to win an Oscar with “Coda”. However, it remains unclear how many users TV + actually has. The service should still be significantly in the doldrums due to the low price of 5 euros per month. (with material from the dpa)
