Windows 11 gains market share, but Windows 10 is still king
AdDuplex has published an updated report with the share of Windows on the computer desktop. Highest adoption of Windows 11 (up more than 3 percentage points since April) is the highlight, although Windows 10 is still in first place.
Windows monopolizes the segment of operating systems for personal computers with an estimated share of 88%, while Apple’s macOS has a quota close to 10% (the share of Mac in computers sold) and Linux keeps the rest, 2 % that is far from its free, open source and potential advantages. It is not expected that the situation will change in the medium term as long as Apple does not license macOS to third parties and Linux is not able to be introduced as a pre-installed system on new OEM computers.

AdDuplex only calculates the adoption of the different versions of Windows and certainly your data is not the most reliable, as it calculates them only from the collection of Microsoft Store apps that use its SDK. In any case, it helps us to assess the trend.
And this tells us that Windows 11 continues to improve, but at a slower rate than expected. The reasons are known and begin with the increase in hardware requirements to migrate to it. In addition, the system is not exciting, it is a tuned Windows 10 that lacks development and the features that were promised at the time and have not yet been activated. On the other hand, the greater stability of Windows 10 and its official support until 2025, advise many users to keep it still.
In any case, the sale of new equipment (all already with Windows 11 pre-installed) and the improvements that are gradually arriving with each update, ensures that its share will continue to rise, like the 3 points from April to here. The rest, you have it in the graph, with the last two versions of Windows 10 above:
- Windows 10 21H2: 38.2% (+3.2 points)
- Windows 10 21H1: 23.9% (-2.5 points)
- Windows 11 21H2: 23.1% (+3.4 points)
- Windows 10 2004: 5.2% (-1.3 points)
- Windows 10 20H2: 3.8% (-2.4 points)
- Other versions of Windows 3% (-0.4 points)
- Windows 11 Insiders: 0.8% (+0.1 points)
In summary. Windows 11 continues to rise, but at a slower pace than expected. Windows 10 is still king, although the situation may change in the coming months.
