iOS 16: finally native keyboard with vibration and Face ID horizontally

Having overcome the macro announcements of WWDC 2022 relating to Apple operating systems, the time has come to review some of the innovations not immediately mentioned in yesterday’s presentation but equally noteworthy. We start with two features of iOS 16 that will surely be appreciated by iPhone users. The first closes a gap with Android that has been repeated for years, the other further improves the use of unlocking the smartphone through face recognition.

FINALLY THE NATIVE KEYBOARD WITH VIBRATION

Oh yes, in the end Apple also decided to introduce the support for haptic feedback in the native iOS 16 keyboard, exactly like Google has been doing for years with its Android smartphones. In practice, this means that by typing on the stock keyboard of iOS 16 users will feel a small vibration that will serve to confirm the correct reception of the input. Previously, to have the same tactile feedback it was necessary to use a third-party keyboard.

Also welcome news because the haptic engine of iPhones is renowned for being among the best on the market. The novelty is part of a broader improvement to the iOS 16 native keyboard that also includes support for 19 new languages for Emoji search and improvements to the user experience for Chinese users. It is certainly not an innovative feature (see Android), but it certainly contributes to making the most recent version of Apple’s operating system even more complete and in step with the competition.

FACE ID HORIZONTAL ALSO ON IPHONE

The other novelty worthy of mention concerns the possibility of use Face ID correctly even when the iPhone is oriented horizontally. The confirmation is contained in the official page dedicated to the preview of iOS 16 (see link in Source) which among the available functions expressly mentions “Landscape Face ID”, specifying:

Face ID works in landscape on supported iPhone models.

The aspect to be clarified at the moment concerns which models are supported, since Apple does not specify it. From empirical tests (based on the beta of iOS 16) it has emerged that the iPhone 12 does not seem able to manage the function which could therefore be limited to the iPhone 13 and later models, starting from the iPhone 14, but more explicit confirmations are expected. . Please note that Face ID already supported horizontal use on iPads, but the function had not yet been extended to iPhones.
