Undersecretary Alessio Butti, during an audition before the parliamentary commission for simplification, outlined the fate of the Spidthe public system of digital identity, used, to date, from beyond 33 million people. The news had been in the air for years, but now there is official confirmation: the Spid will gradually be abandoned to give way to the electronic identity card (CIE), considered a safer standard.

Those who fear a drastic and sudden change, however, can sleep peacefully. According to Butti, it will not be an immediate and unilateral closure, but the path will be gradual and will lead (probably within two or three years) to a new standard in which the Heaven It will be the central pillar of digital identity, flanked by a public it-wallet and private interoperable solutions.

Butti recognized how it Spid He has filled a void left by the public administration for years, managing to bring together everything under a single digital identity, but the time to order has come for the government. Identity Providers who have supported the system to date have been essential for the good success, but from now on the citizens will have to contact only one digital identityissued by the State and conforms to the European safety directives.

The CIE is evaluated safer and more suitable for European standards

The reasons behind this decision are essentially two: the safety and the state legitimacy. The electronic identity card has in fact a certified level of security (level 3) higher than that of Spid And above all, it is emitted directly by the state through the polygraphic institution and the status mint. These two elements therefore represent an essential requirement in a context in which the management of digital identity is increasingly delicate.

Furthermore, the use of Heaven It has already been made more versatile thanks to the related apps and services, and the government during the hearing has promised further investments to simplify its issue, aware that in some municipalities the release times are still very long. To date, however, there are about around 53.5 million of electronic identity cards, therefore the passage should be quite fluid.

Despite the premises, there are still some critical aspects

Despite the great presence on the Italian territory of the Heaventhere are still some critical points that could slow down the transition. The first is technical: Butti referred to the vulnerability of the system of Spida hint that seems to recall the question of the “double spid” scams and all those phishing attempts that target users. The second point is economic: the 40 million euros promised to identity providers in 2023 are still still, blocked by bureaucracy and very long times.

The biggest challenge will still be that communicative. In fact, it is necessary to find a way to explain to the Italians – many of whom have struggled to activate the Spid Or learn to use it – that this system will soon be set aside and set aside. In particular for citizens less accustomed to technology, it is a change that will take time again to be assimilated.

In any case, the disposal of the Spid It is part of a wider European redesign on digital identity. The European Union has already activated the regulation that will create theEu-walletscheduled for 2026, and Italy carried out with its own solution made at home, theIt-walletintegrated in the app.

The goal is therefore to arrive at 2026 with an already rooted and functioning system, in which digital identity and the various attached documents, such as the license and the identity card, are within the reach of smartphones. Only time will tell us if we are faced with an inevitable evolution or the umpteenth digital revolution managed confusedly, but certainly the path to the use of only one digital identity It is now traced.
