In a panorama dominated by closed ecosystems and limited compatibility between devices, Honor tries to propose something innovative in the field of passage between platforms.

With an update to his app “Clone device”, The Chinese brand introduces the First complete solution for data transfer Between Android, iOS and Harmonyos Next. An operation that, to date, required third -party solutions, dedicated apps or the old classic manual synchronization.

With this novelty, Honor aims to make the transition from any smartphone simple and quick, whether it is an iPhone, Galaxy or a Huawei device, to a new Honor phone, without worries and above all keeping all their data.

What is “Device Clone” and why it’s important

“Device Clone” is an application developed by Honor to duplicate the content of one device on another, a function already present for some time on Chinese Android smartphones but often limited to the devices of the same manufacturer.

Today’s novelty lies in the extension of compatibility: with the latest update, Honor allows the cloning directed by three different operating systemsincluding the new Harmonyos Next platform in Huawei.

This means that, if you want to switch from an iPhone, from an old Huawei with Harmonyos Next or from a Google Pixel, it will be possible to transfer to a few contacts, photos, apps, files and settings on a new Honor, without having to use computers or export and import backup on the cloud.

This novelty is really important since, so far, No other brand had offered complete and all -round support for direct cloning among the three main operating environments of the market.

Samsung, for example, has “Smart Switch”, but does not allow a fully fluid transfer to and from Harmonyos. Apple, as known, maintains a closed ecosystem and only supports transfers from Android to iPhone, not the opposite, of course.

Honor, therefore, sets itself as the first producer to open a direct bridge between Android, iOS and Harmonyos Next, an initiative to say the least commendable.

How the new clone device works

To use the new function, users must download or update the “Device Clone” app from the respective official store.

Once installed, the procedure is simple and guided:

  1. Turn on the new Honor smartphone.
  2. Go up Settings> System and updates> Clone Device.
  3. Touch “This is a new device“.
  4. Select the type of old device (Android, iOS, or Harmonyos).
  5. On the old phone, download the App device clone there too.
  6. Open it and select “This is an old device“.
  7. Scan the QR code generated on the new smartphone to connect the two devices.
  8. Select the data to be transferred and touches on “Next”.

The transfer starts automatically and takes place by direct connection between the two devices.

The Support to Harmonyos Next It is perhaps the most interesting part of the announcement. This is the new generation of the Huawei owner operating system, designed to be totally independent of Android and developed with native architecture.

Despite having separated from Huawei in 2020, Honor still maintains compatibility with some elements of the Chinese ecosystem.

The strategy behind is evident: the brand aims to facilitate the migration of Huawei users to its smartphones, especially now that many Huawei devices no longer use Android.

Also, as some analysts point out, it is a passage that could also prefigure one future convergence or deeper interoperability between Honor and the Harmony ecosystem.

Honor’s commercial strategy

Honor does not hide the intention of growing outside China, and functionality like this can make the difference in markets where users are looking for alternatives valid to Apple and Samsung.

Furthermore, eliminate the complexity of the transition from an old device to a new one It could break down one of the main obstacles to the change of brand, especially among the least experienced users, or the fear of data loss as messages and above all multimedia content to which the average user is particularly linked, for obvious reasons.

It remains to be seen how fluid and complete the cloning will be, especially to and from iPhone. Apple notoriously limits access to some system data, and Honor may have to deal with technical restrictions that impose compromises.

Finally, we point out that the company has not yet published an official list of data compatible for each platform or software prerequisites to access the complete cloning of the data but has ensured that the artificial intelligence integrated in the app will be able to adapt the transfer to the limitations of the individual OS.

When will it be available?

The new clone device is already available for all Honor users By updating the app of the homonymous app with a release that, probably, should start from China and then extend to the rest of the global markets in the coming weeks.
