From Nest Aware to Google Home Premium

In recent months Google has started a rebranding process that concerns its smart home ecosystem.

At the center is the abandonment of the Nest Aware brand, historically linked to the advanced features of video cameras and intelligent bells, in favor of a wider Google Home Premium.

This subscription should integrate new functions based on artificial intelligence, including Gemini Live (the assistant to the conversational applied to the connected house) and ask home, which will allow you to directly interrogate domestic devices.

Home Brieftherefore, fits into this package as further piece, going to provide a synthetic but rich in the daily home activities.

What is home brief and how it will work

The Teardown of the Google Home app (Version 4.0.53.2), by colleagues of Android Authorityhas revealed several references to the new function, including a new screen that explicitly speaks of “Your Home Brief“.

The idea is to offer users a daily summary of notificationsaccessible at the end of the day, that summarizes events and alarms recorded by the various connected devices.

In the strings of the code we read for example: “Make Every Chamber Notification More Helpful, and Check Your Home Brief at the end of the day” (“Make each notification of the more useful video camera and check your home brief at the end of the day”). This suggests that the function will not be limited to the Nest cameras, but will be able to extend to the entire network of Smart sensors and devices integrated in the Google Home app.

For the most attentive, we report the code strings in which the function in question was spotted:

<string name="ai_opt_in_info_event_description_title">AI descriptions</string>
<string name="ai_opt_in_info_notification_summary_content">Make every camera notification more helpful, and check your Home Brief at the end of the day</string>

Put simply, instead of receiving individual notices fragmented during the day, the user will be able to access a structured summary which puts the most relevant events of the day in order.

The comparison with Samsung Now Brief

It is no coincidence that Samsung’s very Now Brief is reminded, introduced in recent months within the SmartThings ecosystem. There too, the idea is to provide a daily summary that you mix useful information on the house, security updates and even contextual elements such as weather forecast.

With home briefs, Google seems to want to replicate the same logic within its environment, however exploiting the integration with Gemini to to enrich the contents of the summary and make them more personalized.

Compulsory subscription

However, there is an important detail: the app screen reveals an asterisk that indicates how Home Brief will only be available with Google Home Premium.

This means that the function will be among those reserved for paying users, in line with what was already happening for some Nest Aware features.

It is not yet clear what the cost of the subscription will be, but Google has left traces that suggest a free trial period as evidenced by the following strings of code:

<string name="concierge_v2_offer_landing_subtitle">Try out advanced Gemini for Home features on all your compatible devices and make your home more helpful and secure</string>
<string name="concierge_v2_offer_landing_title">Update to Google Home Premium for {offer_duration}</string>

In fact, in the strings analyzed, references to offers and trials appear, with formulas of the type “Update to Google Home Premium for Offer Duration“.

It is therefore plausible that a Test monthas already happens for Nest Aware in several markets.

Timing and availability

There is no yet one date For the launch of home briefs, but the inclusion in the Google Home App code suggests that the debut is not far away.

The rollout could take place in parallel with the extension of Google Home Premium and with the progressive arrival of Live Gemini on Nest devices.

If the function is appreciated, it could evolve beyond simple safety summary, for example including energy advice, statistics of using devices or contextual reminders.

Home Brief represents a further step in Google’s strategy to transform the Smart Home into an intelligent and proactive environment. By offering a daily summary of domestic events, the function aims to simplify the life of users and integrate a whole series of heterogeneous information into a single flow that today arrive in a fragmented way.

It remains to be seen what the link will be welcomed with the Premium subscription and how much the promise of greater utility will be able to convince those who are still reluctant to pay for extra services in the connected house.

How to download or update the Google Home App and register for the preview program

The Google Home App can be downloaded (and consequently updated) through the Google Play Store: to do this, it will be sufficient to make a tap on the underlying badge and, from the app page, select “Install” (to download it) or “Update” (if an update is available).

For access the program of “public preview” of Google Home, it is not necessary to download a particular version of the app or access a beta program from Google Play Store: enough, in fact, will request an invitation within the app (Settings> Public preview) and wait for it to be accepted (the user will be notified through a notification).
