Great news from the world of emojis, which It is prepared to welcome numerous new additions with the official release of Unicode 17.0announced a little while ago by the Unicode Consortium together with seven new emojis that will enrich the digital conversations of users in the coming months.
What are the new emojis coming?
The Unicode 17.0 collection brings several expressive and fun images that reflect some modern communication trends. Among the most interesting innovations we find a new face that promises to become popular to express confusion or surprise, and references to pop culture with a cloud inspired by comics and cartoons, in which it traditionally represents scenes of struggle. Natural lovers will instead be able to use the Mountain Emoji, the majestic marine mammal, while legends and mysteries will have a hairy creature available which is clearly inspired by the various international versions of the Bigfoot.
The new update does not forget the importance of inclusive representation. A classic Gender-Neutral dancer, complete with variants for the tone of the skin, is therefore introduced, thus allowing a wider and diversified representation. In addition, variants of existing emoji shades have been added.
When will the new emojis be available?
Despite today’s official announcement, Users will have to wait a few more months before using these new emojis. The timing follow a predictable calendar, with Google who has already started showing previews of its versions, and WhatsApp that will introduce support at the beginning of 2026 Microsoft will probably close the line with a Windows 11 update in the second half of the year.
However, the novelties of Unicode 17.0 do not limit themselves to emojis, but include 4,802 new characters, bringing the total to 159,800 coded characters. Four new writing systems have been added – Sidetic, Tolong Siki, Beria Erfe and Tai Yo – confirming the commitment of the consortium in preserving and digitizing the languages of the world.
