The Doogee brand launched the Doogee V20 mobile this 2022, and shortly after it launched the S98 model, a resistant phone, one of the so-called “ruggedized”, which now evolves with the new S98 Proa rugged phone with thermal imaging that I have been able to test for a few days.
The brand advertises it as “alien inspired design» due to the shape of the camera bump combined with thin lines on the back, and they are right, it looks like I am holding something out of a sci-fi movie in my hand.
I tell you about it in the video. As well as being an extremely rugged phone, it can boast a great camera:
– 48MP main camera.
– Thermal imaging sensor.
– Night vision (SONY® IMX350 20MP) with infrared light sensor.
The thermal camera of the Doogee S98 Pro
To capture thermal images use the thermal sensor InfiRay, with the highest thermal resolution of 256×192, offering more than twice the number of thermal pixels than other sensors. This is coupled with a frequency of 25 Hz, which makes it possible to accurately detect drafts, humidity, leaks, electrical shorts, blockages and high temperatures.
The thermal sensor also uses a technology called Dual Spectrum Fusion Algorithm, which allows images from the thermal sensor and the primary sensor to overlap. It also has a level that will allow us to adjust how much transparency of thermal detail we want on the real image, which helps to focus more precisely on any problem spots.
Technical characteristics of the Doogee S98 Pro
It features a Helio G96, Octa Core, 2.1GHz processor using 12nm, a 6000mAh battery with 33W fast charge support, a Samsung 16MP front (for selfie) camera, 8GB RAM with 256GB ROM space, IP68, IP69K, MIL-STD-810H protection, lateral fingerprint recognition, NFC, Corning Gorilla Glass and Android 12.0.
Personal opinion
I am a fan of this type of mobile. I love the CAT, the Crosscall, the AGM and the Doogee, and I admit that this one has impressed me a lot both for its daring design and for the fact that it is not as thoughtful a mobile as I imagined.
The thermal camera reaches another level, I really like the transparency on the real image to better find the points we focus on, and it is capable of capturing the temperature of very distant elements, as seen in the video that I leave you here above .
Another aspect that I really liked is being able to customize the side button. In my case the flashlight turns on when you press it once, and it takes a screenshot when you press it twice. If I keep it pressed it opens the Walkie Talkie function.
The price of $329 at this launch stage is really a bargain for anyone who needs a rugged phone capable of submerging more than 30 minutes at 1.5 meters deep (I use them mainly for my snorkeling sessions).
