You want to build a particle accelerator on the moon, that's why

Building a particle accelerator on the moon? This is a proposal published in the arXiv prepress database, which considers our satellite the ideal place for the construction of this machine. The reason is soon to be said.

In order to reveal the secrets of the smallest subatomic particles, physicists must make the particle accelerators as cold as possible, remove as much air as possible and hold them still. On the moon we know that it is very cold: at night, with the Sun below the horizon, temperatures drop to -73 ° C. By day, however, they reach 38 ° C. However, there are areas that are always cold, the lunar craters in the shade.

Our satellite has no atmosphere: the moon has a void 10 times better than anything physicists have ever produced in their experiments. Thanks to the construction of this machine, scientists could better study neutrinos, small spectral and agile particles that have no electric charge and almost no mass.

Furthermore, a structure on the moon could produce high energy particles in large quantities, shoot them in our atmosphere and let us study cosmic rays better, helping us to better understand this aspect – still very mysterious. The technical challenge of arriving and building sophisticated experiments in this inhospitable place has yet to be resolved, but the success of the idea could exponentially increase our knowledge of the Universe.
