Xiaomi Mix Fold 2: Contact with the new foldable

We have had the opportunity to test the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, the latest folding smartphone from the Chinese manufacturer.  Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 comes with some features that make it really interesting. The new phone has a 6.56” outdoor display at 120Hz with 1,000 nit brightness (HBM) and a huge 8.0” internal display with 2K+ resolution, 120Hz rate and 1,000 nit brightness (HBM). The company has managed to fit the internal parts into a body that is 5.4mm thick when unfolded and 11.2mm when folded. These are the same dimensions as the Huawei Mate XS 2, and surpass the Samsung Galaxy Fold4 with its 6.3 / 15.8 mm thickness. In favor of the latter we must say that it offers resistance to water, a quality that the Xiaomi foldable lacks.

In practice, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 feels more comfortable in the hand than other foldables. We no longer have the feeling of “two phones stuck together”, but its thickness is only slightly greater than that of other flagships. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 features Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Its battery is 4,500 mAh with 67W fast charging, but surprisingly it lacks wireless charging.

The cameras have been co-developed with Leica, and include a 50 megapixel Sony IMX766 main sensor, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. It is possible to record video in 8K resolution with support for the Dolby Vision HDR standard. Interestingly, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 does not have a camera on the inner screen, but only on the outer screen. This shouldn’t be a big problem as it’s possible to take selfies with the exterior cameras, although it could be a problem when video conferencing on the big screen.

Bad news and a glimmer of hope

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 will not arrive in Spain. However, the company is doing everything possible to bring the next generation of this range during the second half of next year 2023.
