An update from security provider WithSecure prevented programs from running from external and virtual drives. The error has been corrected again.
A product update from the security software provider WithSecure has caused problems on Windows systems. Under certain conditions, a service from the provider blocked the execution of programs. The error has now been corrected. Both WithSecure Elements and the products from the provider’s business suite are affected.
WithSecure received the first reports on Monday at 1:46 p.m. Central European Time. The security provider writes this in a document to its customers that is available to iX. Only systems with external storage and virtual disks were affected. Programs installed there could not be started, apparently the device management tool Device Control blocked them.
Bug fix deployed automatically
The UlCore-Win64 2022-08-22_01 update or Ulcore-Win32 2022-08-22_01 update on 32-bit systems is to blame for the problem. In the meantime, however, the trigger has been found and fixed with the updates Ulcore-Win64 2022-08-22_02 and Ulcore-Win32 2022-08-22_02. These will be automatically played out on all affected systems, WithSecure promises in the letter and on its system status page.
In a few cases, however, the system would display the customized UIcore version as “not installed”. Then customers should temporarily disable Device Control and restart the services fsulhoster, fsulnethoster and f-secure gatekeeper. Device control can then be switched on again. Alternatively, restarting the entire system solves the problem.
WithSecure is the business division of security provider F-Secure, which split its consumer and enterprise divisions earlier this year.
