Windows 10 and 11 get new feature that shows which program is using a file

Windows 11 has already received several new features with the 22H2 version and now PowerToys is bringing another novelty to the system and its predecessor, Windows 10. With it, it will now be possible to know which program is using a file, which can be very useful in many situations.

As reported by Windows Latest, the new PowerToys function is called File LockSmith. With this extension for File Explorer it is possible to know which process is using it. To do this, just right click on the file and tap on “what is using this file?”.

As we can see above, a new window will appear showing which running processes are using the file. There is even a button to end the process.

This is a great way to solve problems when trying to delete files in Windows, as the system does not allow you to do this if it is in use by a program or process and the Task Manager does not show which program is using it.
