You already know that on WhatsApp it is possible to talk to people without having them in your contact agenda, but if we limit ourselves to the agenda, have you ever wondered how many contacts do you have? Surely many, and you have probably never spoken to most of them or have not done so for a long time.

From time to time, it doesn’t hurt clean and delete the oldest ones, especially, if any of them have changed their number. In fact, it is quite advisable to remove it. And the reason makes all the sense in the world.

Avoid contact with strangers

Although WhatsApp has different security measures such as end-to-end encryption or two-step verificationmany times protect our privacy It depends on ourselves. Something as simple as deleting an old contact can save you from an awkward situation.

The reason is very simple: operators sometimes “recycle” or reuse numbers that previously belonged to someone, either because that person has unsubscribed it or because the operator himself has deactivated it. That means the old number of a family member or friend of yours may now belong to someone you don’t know.

In your WhatsApp, that number will continue to appear with your friend’s name and the old conversation you had with him a long time ago. Even even if you have never started a chat With it, that WhatsApp contact will be shown on your mobile phone with your friend’s name even if it belongs to a stranger.

To avoid this, it is best to delete a contact when an acquaintance notifies you of their change of number. Please note that WhatsApp accesses your phone’s contacts book to recognize which of your contacts use WhatsApp.

Therefore, to delete a contact, open WhatsApp, go to the Chats tab and press the icon to open a new chat. Find and select the contact you want to delete; A chat will automatically open with this person (a new one or the one you had if you have spoken with this contact before).

From there, the method varies slightly on iOS and Android:

Delete Contact Android

  • On Android: Tap the contact name and the three dots icon in the upper right corner; then click on ‘View in contact book’, again on the three dots icon and select ‘Delete’.
Delete WhatsApp Contact

  • On iOS– Tap the contact name at the top and tap ‘Edit’ > ‘Delete Contact’.

Once deleted, the WhatsApp contact will no longer appear and the old conversation will be displayed with the phone number, not the name of your friend or family member. If you like, you can also delete the chat so that that number disappears completely from your WhatsApp.

With this simple action, you will save space on your device (very useful if you have an old or low-capacity phone), you will save time when it comes to finding the people you really want to talk to and, above all, you will prevent someone unknown from contacting you or having access to your personal information (profile photo, status, last connection time…).
