Last week Jack Dorsey, founder and CEO of Twitter, announced his resignation from the position at the head of the social network, being replaced by Parag Agrawal, a name that until then was unknown outside of the most specialized circles in technological and business information.

Parag Agrawal replaces Jack Dorsey as Twitter’s new CEO after leaving office

Until that moment Agrawal had been performing the position of CTO (chief technology officer) on Twitter since 2017, having joined the company in 2011 after working as a researcher at companies such as AT&T, Microsoft and Yahoo. Agrawal, 37, has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University and a BA in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

His work as CTO on Twitter included the design of the strategy in machine learning and artificial intelligence. His work in the reform of the internal infrastructure carried out by Twitter in 2019 was important and he had long worked closely with Dorsey, although always from a low profile, in keeping with his discreet personal profile and, according to Dorsey himself, “curious, rational, creative and modest.”

Some of the reforms in which Agrawal has intervened have been the modification of the Twitter timeline or machine learning in ads to show users those that would be related to their interests, something that allowed the social network to increase its income. These successes gave him access to the restricted Twitter Architecture Group, which brings together the best engineers in the company.

From that position he has also developed important work in aspects related to the fight against fake news and misinformation, contents that have sparked repeated controversies in recent times about both political and health positions.

Agrawal himself expressed his gratitude from his Twitter profile when Dorsey resigned, thanking the support and showing his commitment to delivering the best results to both users and shareholders.
