Software increasingly determines the useful life of electronic devices, which can also become obsolete as much as the physical part.
The problem is not restricted to the device’s operating system, which ages prematurely, but also to installed applications, which for various reasons need a system capable of supporting certain functions.
This week WhatsApp, one of the world’s leading messengers, announced that from 2023, it will no longer support mobile devices running an old operating system.
Offering an app on devices whose operating system is no longer supported or updated poses security risks, and the WhatsApp developers are aware of this. So, from what comes next, you’ll need a smartphone or tablet with at least Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) or iOS 12.1. It is worth noting that Android 4.2 was released in 2012, while iOS 12 in 2018, just four years ago.
These requirements prevent the application from being used on some mobile devices that are still in use, as many users are unaware of the risks they run when using a device that is no longer supported. If it works and does what it should, the user usually doesn’t plan on switching to a new one.
From 2023, smartphone owners who are no longer eligible will have to buy a newer smartphone, otherwise they will be forced to abandon WhatsApp.
To check the version of your operating system, just go to the device settings and look for the corresponding item.
So, will your cell phone be able to continue running WhatsApp?
