WhatsApp has just rolled out a very interesting feature in its latest beta. This gives users the opportunity to choose a nickname, which we imagine replacing their name and telephone number. An option that will strengthen the security and protection of their data.

Regularly, WhatsApp tests new features. The most important release recently in undoubtedly the possibility of modifying its messages after sending, an option already available on many competing messaging systems. And that’s not the only point where Meta’s application lags. Indeed, while nicknames were installed a long time ago on other messaging systems, WhatsApp is still reluctant to integrate them into its application.

However, that could change very soon. For once, the information comes straight from the WABetaInfo site, which got its hands on version 2.23.11.15, the latest beta to date. In the latter, WhatsApp allows users to choose a nickname, as you can see in the screenshot below. This will be preceded by an @, as tradition dictates.

WhatsApp could soon allow you to choose a nickname

To do this, you will have to go to the Profile tab of the application to access the option. We imagine that this nickname will allow users to meet before starting a conversation, which will greatly improve confidentiality within its ecosystem. Indeed, for the moment, the number of the person is strictly necessary to be able to add it in his contacts.

With this feature, WhatsApp could therefore seek to increase the security and anonymity of its users, like other recent updates, such as the possibility of locking conversations with a password. However, it remains to be determined how the application will use this new function. For example, it may only apply to group conversations, which would make it easier to navigate between messages.
