In the seventh edition of its annual study “The State of 5G”, VIAVI revealed that 2,497 cities around the world have commercial 5G networks. Spain It is one of the countries in the world where the coverage of the fifth generation of mobile networks has spread the most, achieving a very encouraging result to draw from.

This VIAVI annual report showcases new industry data showing that 5G connectivity reached a global tipping pointsince 5G networks are active in 47 of the 70 largest economies in the world according to GDP.

Spain, sixth place in 5G deployment

Several countries, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, the Philippines, and South Korea, have already implemented 5G in their cities. Within the next few years, this fifth generation of mobile networks is expected to be available in almost all parts of the developed world.

In fact, our country is quite well standing worldwide in coverage by cities. The United States surpassed China by number of cities with 5G, with coverage 503 to 356. However, China holds the lead in other key metrics when it comes to what Viavi called “depth of coverage.” This means that while the United States may have 5G in more of its cities, China has faster data speeds and more clients and base stations deployed. With the combination of both criteria (number of deployments and depth), Spain would occupy the sixth position.

According to the latest data from the Report Digital Society in Spain 2023published by the Fundación Telefónica, a total of 1,719 Spanish municipalities already have 5G, which means coverage of more than 83% of the population.

A total of 18 countries announced their first 5G deployments in 2022. The new 5G countries include two of the largest developing economies, India and Mexico, as well as other emerging economies such as Angola, Ethiopia and Guatemala. An estimated 23 other countries have trials underway and 32 countries have announced their deployment intentions, leaving only 48 countries without any plans for 5G.

This is because it was previously cheaper and faster to deploy 5G using existing infrastructure, allowing communication service providers to focus on upgrading radio access network components.

Taking a look at the status of 5G SA we can see that it is “progressing well” globally. These networks, which are built on a new 5G core and work independently of the existing 4G infrastructure, are rapidly going from strength to strength around the world. In January 2023, 45 5G SA networks were in operation in 23 countries, including Spain. By comparison, in January 2022, there were only 24 non-standalone (NSA) networks worldwide.
