Apple has removed from the App Store all the apps that belong to the Russian colossus VKowner of the platform VKontakte national alternative to Facebook and second internet company in the country behind Yandex (in turn already in the crosshairs of the West). The decision was taken following the new sanctions imposed on Russia by the United Kingdom with which they want to hit the oligarchs after the farce referendum in recent days. Among these there are also several executives of Gazprombank, a bank linked to VK.
VK makes it known through the official website that the apps already installed on your smartphone (including Mail.ru, VK Music, Youla) will continue to work regularly (but clearly they will no longer be updated). However, there may be some difficulties in receiving notifications and with payments, but the technicians are busy solving these problems. “The VKontakte application will continue to work on Apple devices as well“, it is read, “in addition, you can use the mobile version of the m.vk.com site and the desktop version with full functionality“.
So Apple has removed all VK apps from the App Store in compliance with the sanctions imposed by London against Moscow, simultaneously closing the developer accounts associated with them. Since the beginning of the conflict, the Kremlin has blocked several social networks, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter included, on the other side the West has tried to target several Russian men of power through sanctions, including the CEO of VK and Putin’s close ally Vladimir Kiriyenko .
For the moment, the apps of the VK group are still available on the Google Play Store.
