Volvo is adding apple CarPlay to several model series that do not yet support iPhone integration. An update unlocks CarPlay in Volvos that use android Automotive as the operating system. When connected to an iPhone, certain iOS apps and functions from music to navigation can then be used on the vehicle’s infotainment system. Apple’s voice assistance system Siri is also on board.
Import the update yourself – or at the dealer
The update is available for the two all-electric models Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. It is also offered for the XC60, S90 and V90 vehicle series from model year 2022 and S60, V60, XC90 and XC40 (only in vehicles with Android Automotive) from model year 2023. The update can be installed over-the-air in the car or imported at the dealer, as the manufacturer announced. The new software version 2.2 has been made available step by step since mid-July.
The Volvo brand Polestar had previously submitted CarPlay for the Polestar 2 model in June, which also uses Android as the car operating system. Android Automotive supports CarPlay as a smartphone integration in these vehicles, but not Android Auto.
Volvo a partner for CarPlay 2
In addition to Polestar, Apple has also named Volvo as a partner for the next generation of CarPlay, which aims to bring Apple’s iPhone operating system to the entire dashboard. According to Apple, vehicle functions such as seat heating and air conditioning can also be controlled directly via CarPlay or Siri. It remains unclear in which Volvo vehicles CarPlay 2 will be used. When presenting the system, Apple emphasized that the first vehicles with the new Carplay generation should not be announced until the end of 2023.
