Vivo intends to give the competition a run for its money once again with its next generation of top-of-the-line smartphones, the X80: the Chinese company has anticipated some of the upcoming innovations from the camera point of view, just three days after the official presentation of the entire range – which we remember should consist of three models: X80, X80 Pro and X80 Pro Plus.

The main novelty will be the debut of a Sony’s new high-end CMOS sensor, namely IMX866. The optical format will be 1 / 1.5 “, just slightly larger than that seen on the previous generation IMX766 (which was 1 / 1.56”). The resolution has not yet been specified, but it has been anticipated that the famous gimbal stabilization typical of the brand will return. The lens will be seven elements and benefit from a Zeiss anti-reflective coating (this will be available on all cameras).

The sensor will also switch to a RGBW filter instead of Quad Bayer mounted on the predecessor, which should result in more light being captured. The custom ISP developed by Vivo, codenamed V1 +, will be able to make the most of the IMX866 thanks to a new set of specially developed algorithms. Speaking of ISPs, it is interesting to observe that Vivo has stated that they will be coupled to a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1depending on the model, thus confirming the chips that will be used (not that there is much other choice, for that matter).

The teaser images also show a sensor Samsung: an ISOCELL GNV (the V means that this is a custom model made especially for Vivo) 1 / 1.3 “, so even bigger. It is possible that it will be placed in the main camera of the more prestigious X80 Pro Plus, not unlike what success with the X70 Pro Plus which used an ISOCELL GN1 (the other two models, in fact, Sony’s IMX 766).
