Samsung presented yesterday the new foldable Galaxy Z Flip3 and Galaxy Z Fold3, which come with various improvements over their predecessors. The Galaxy Z Fold3 is Samsung’s first smartphone with an under-screen camera. It is a 4MP camera that is semi-hidden under the screen pixels, while its predecessor Galaxy Z Fold2 had a 10MP camera in a hole in the screen. Interestingly, the Galaxy Z Flip3 lacks this technology. If you’re wondering why, here’s what the company has to say about it. According to Sammobile, Samsung representatives have explained that the Galaxy Z Fold3 has an ideal form factor for an under-display camera. In other words, a larger screen is required for its implementation. Reps also say that selfies are a more important aspect on the Galaxy Z Flip3. So it comes with a regular 10MP camera in a punched hole. This suggests that the under-screen camera does not offer as good a quality as the hole-punch camera. Recently, a Xiaomi manager has spoken along the same lines regarding the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4’s under-screen camera, which is not ideal for those who take a lot of selfies. Regardless, as technology improves as it ages with new iterations, we may see a Galaxy Z Flip smartphone with an under-display camera in the not-too-distant future.
