It is possible that an improved QR code scanner will soon appear on devices with the Android operating system , capable of reading them from a long distance. This scanner will be built into the Google system app.
Android expert Mishaal Rahman revealed the information on his official social media account (formerly known as Twitter). The new function will automatically detect the QR code in the frame, enlarge it and scan it. An improved scanner has been added to the ML Kit Barcode Scanning API libraries versions 17.2.0 and 18.3.0. This function is also implemented in the Google QR Code Scanner system application, designed to read QR codes. Machine learning was used to create this improved scanner. Artificial intelligence determines the desired object in the frame, displays it on the screen and cuts off the rest to protect user privacy. However, it is still unclear how exactly the algorithms of this function work.
Mishaal Rahman believes that the advanced QR code scanner will appear on smartphones running Android 13 or newer.
For these versions of the operating system, the scanner will use the mentioned ML Kit Barcode Scanning library, in which the new feature has been implemented. However, the effectiveness of the scanner cannot yet be accurately assessed, since its full implementation has not yet occurred.
