When we talk about percussion pistols we can be talking about several different types of devices, from those that perform superficial massages to those that are capable of hitting with more intensity to solve problems among athletes.

During the last weeks I have been testing one of them, the Theragun Pro, from Therabody company, and it has been an experience that I will tell you about now.

What is Therabody

Therabody is a company founded in 2007 by Dr. Jason Wersland, who was in a motorcycle accident and was looking for a way to relieve persistent muscle and nerve pain. He found a partial solution with vibration therapy, and began looking for a portable device that would
will provide the desired muscle relief.

This is how the company was born in 2008, and they have this gun for percussive massage therapy that is quite well known in the sector. The company has vibration therapy devices, pneumatic compression devices, and muscle stimulation devices.

Theragun pistol

In addition to having a design that allows it to be grasped from different angles so that a single person can reach any part of the body, the pistol offers 16 mm of amplitude, a speed of 2400 percussions per minute and an adequate power for the treatment of the deep muscles, which clearly differentiates it from massage guns.

I spoke with those responsible by phone, and they told me that the idea is to apply the gun on the affected area for 15 seconds, enough time to obtain results (if the pain persists after that, it is because there is a major injury that cannot be treated with muscle stimulation).

Its power is striking, without a doubt, but also its silence. It is discreet, like an electric toothbrush, something common in the devices of this last generation: Theragun PRO (the one I have tried), Theragun Elite and Theragun Prime. They also have the Theragun Mini, by the way, more compact and portable.

What can we use the Theragun for

As you can see in the video, the greatest benefit is for athletes (what better example than with Pau Gasol). Before talking about my experience with the Theragun Pro, let’s look at the list of benefits described on the company page:

– Increased blood flow.
– Decrease in lactic acid.
– Improved range of motion.
– Hydration of muscle tissue.
– Prevention of adhesions.
– Warming up and faster muscle recovery.
– Increased flexibility.

They are logical benefits in most cases. If a pistol performs 2400 percussions per minute with power penetrating the skin 16mm, it stands to reason that there will be increased heat and greater flexibility.

My tests with the Theragun Pro

Let’s get to the point now, to my experience with the Pro.

First, it is important to keep in mind that we are not talking about a toy or something cheap to be around the house. It costs almost 600 euros, and if you do not practice sports or have muscle problems due to an injury or the consequences of your daily activity, it will surely not be worth it.

Theragun Pro

The first thing I did was apply it to my legs to see if I could do push-ups without the need to warm up. The result was positive. As soon as I get out of bed, there are days that I don’t even reach my ankles, but with a session of a few minutes I was able to stretch correctly. There was no pain, I just wanted to test the flexibility in the muscles. Test passed.

The next test was on a friend who came home with pain in his upper back, below his neck. Probably due to tension or stress, since he had not done any physical activity. They were 15 seconds in the zone and the relief was immediate. Pain went down 90%, he told me. Test passed.

The third was a person who has problems in three vertebrae of the spine, which causes pain in the lower back. You generally have to do exercises to strengthen the area, to avoid pain attacks, and I decided to try the Theragun Pro in a time of crisis. The result was negative, it did not help at all, although it did not make anything worse. Many times the pain improves with hot packs in the area, so I thought that the Theragun could help, as it warms the muscle, but it did not.

We are talking about a gun that treats the muscles, that activates them, that heats them, that makes them more flexible, but does not do any kind of magic, so it is advisable to always be in contact with a professional to verify if it is being done. the right job.

In the talk I had with them, they made it clear to me that it is impossible for the Theragun to harm, since it does not reach the bone or generate problems in that sense, but it does not always manage to solve localized pain, since many times they do not have a muscular origin.

Theragun heads

An important issue to keep in mind is that we can use different types of heads. From those that have a cone shape to those that use a pad, for more sensitive areas, through one with a wedge shape. Each area of the body may need a different head, and each one presses in one way or another, making it even more important to always talk to a professional who will tell us which head to use, where and how often.
